Less than a week in, Nintendos hot new Switch 2 handheld video game console is already breaking sales recordsincluding ones set by its iconic predecessor. Nintendo announced Wednesday that the Switch 2 has sold more than 3.5 million units around the globe, crowning it the fastest-selling Nintendo console of all time. Considering the massive success of the first Nintendo Switch and the longtime success of the Nintendo DSthe second-best-selling console of all time, just behind the PlayStation 2thats an impressive distinction. Fans around the world are showing their enthusiasm for Nintendo Switch 2 as an upgraded way to play at home and on the go, Nintendo chief operating officer Doug Bowser said. We are thankful for their response and happy to see the fun they are already having with Nintendo Switch 2, as they explore new features and games that bring friends and family together in new ways, he added. Beating its own record For comparison, Nintendo moved 2.74 million units of the original Nintendo Switch the first time around, in 2017. Those were already impressive numbers at the time, with a month of Nintendo Switch sales passing 20% of the Wii Us sales across the odd hybrid consoles entire lifespan. The first Nintendo Switch has sold more than 152 million units as of March of this year, putting it on track to eclipse the record of the Nintendo DS, which sits at 154 million units.  The Switch 2 launched on June 5, following a preorder period that saw the consoles sell out online in a flash. Prior to the midnight release, gamers around the globe lined up outside Nintendo flagship stores and chain retailers, fittingly killing time playing games on their soon-to-be last-generation handhelds during the original Switchs waning hours. Improving on greatness Nintendos Switch 2 doesnt reinvent the wheelbut with the wheel still rolling so well, why would they? The Switch 2, which retails for $450, boasts a larger 1080-pixel screen, a beefier processor that can run more complex games, enhanced social features, and an improved software shop. (Switch fans know that the eShop update alone could justify an upgrade.) The new console launches with Mario Kart World, an open-world version of the cartoonish racing game thats defined Nintendo consoles since the Super Nintendo. While the Switch 2 might be a little tough to track down for a while, inventory woes wont hold a candle to Sonys rocky next-gen console launch in late 2020. Gamers hoping to snag a PlayStation 5 upon its debut often came up empty-handed as the global chip shortage and sky-high pandemic demand squeezed the consoles supply. Sony only declared its supply chain woes officially over three years later. Nintendo is facing intense demand with the Switch 2, but these days Trumps tariffs were the companys main launch concern. The Japanese company pushed back preorder plans in April as it navigated challenges the trade war might pose to its global sales.

On Tuesday, President Donald Trump said he plans to phase out the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), but interestingly, not until after this year’s 2025 hurricane season. The administration has long vowed to “eliminate” FEMA, the nation’s key disaster relief agency. But who will pick up the responsibilityand the pricey tabfor fighting off hurricanes and other disasters made worse by climate change, which is increasing ocean and atmospheric temperatures and causing higher sea levels? According to Trump, the answer to that question is: state governments. We want to bring it down to the state level, Trump said in the Oval Office. A governor should be able to handle it. And frankly, if they cant handle it, the aftermath, then maybe they shouldnt be governor. What does FEMA do and why is it important? Basically, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) coordinates the federal governments role in disaster preparation, prevention, and relief, whether that’s in response to a hurricane, major earthquake, or flood in the United States. Handling a disaster is both logistically complicated and expensiveand increasingly deadly. FEMA is just the latest in a string of federal agencies to see massive budget and job cuts during Trump’s second term, led by the so-called Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). But when it comes to FEMA, the stakes are particularly high as the country heads into this year’s fast-approaching hurricane season, which the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has predicted will be particularly intense, based on a number of factors including above-average water temperatures in the Atlantic Ocean. Last year’s Atlantic hurricane season was the deadliest in nearly two decades, and quite costly. The season brought 18 named storms and 11 hurricanes, five of which made landfall in the U.S., leading to hundreds of deaths. There were more than 150 deaths attributed solely to Hurricane Helene, which wreaked havoc on Florida and Georgia, and caused massive flooding and destruction in North Carolina and Tennessee. The price tag for the 2024 season is estimated at more than $190 billion, per NPR. Without help from the federal government in the future, the question remains: Will states shoulder that burden? Tuesday’s news comes weeks after an internal FEMA assessment said the agency is not ready to handle catastrophic storms this summer, which CNN reported.

Amid economic uncertainty, layoffs, and rapid changes in the workforce, strong leadership teams are vital to navigate challenges, and some companies have figured this out. On Wednesday, Comparably, an online platform for workplace culture insights and compensation data, revealed its eighth annual Best Leadership Teams ranking, highlighting the top-rated large, small, and midsize companies excelling in leadership. At the top of the list was Elsevier, the science and academic publishing company, and ADP, the provider of human resources software. “ADP’s leadership has been instrumental in strengthening ADP’s brandawareness, growing market share, and leading the company’s sales, marketing, and go-to-market activities,” an ADP employee said. These two top companies are led by women CEOs, despite only 6% of CEOs worldwide being women, and retained their ranking from the year before. “The leadership team always gives equal chances to the team members. There is no partiality or favoritism. The forum is open for suggestions, feedback, and discussion from the stakeholders,” Comparably quoted one Elsevier employee as saying. Despite positive employee ratings, women CEOs tend to leave their positions at higher rates than men, according to a recent report from Challenger, Gray, & Christmas, which looked at monthly data between January and February 2025. According to the report, 54% of women CEOs who left their position that month were replaced by men, and the rate of new women CEOs declined from 26% to 23%. Where the top-ranked companies are located Among the top 25 companies featured in the ranking, more than half are based in California and New York, with 10 companies across the Golden State, four in New York City, and one in upstate New York. The ranking is the result of millions of reviews by employees who anonymously rated their direct managers, C-suite executives, and CEOs over a 12-month period. This year’s list was compiled with over 15 million ratings from 70,000 American and Canadian companies. Here are the top 10 large companies with the best leadership teams.
